Middle and High School Students Join Top Engineering Students for Formula Hybrid School Day

Students see the challenges engineers in the automotive industry encounter while feeling the excitement.

Area middle and high school students are joining hundreds of the world’s top engineering students at Dartmouth’s one-of-a-kind Formula Hybrid Competition on Wednesday May 3 at 10:00am for Formula Hybrid School Day at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It’s a mini version of the competition experience during which students will get up close to hybrid and electric racecars; see the cars in action during the autocross and acceleration events; ask SAE International questions; and speak with corporate sponsors from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford, General Motors and LG Chem Power about their companies and the vital roles engineers play in their businesses.

“Formula Hybrid is the only competition that requires the full cooperation of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and computer scientists in the planning and building of their cars,” said Douglas Fraser,  director of Formula Hybrid and senior research engineer at Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. “So the event is an amazing opportunity for students to experience first-hand the complex process of designing and building a working vehicle and to ask questions that may guide them in their college education and professional interests.”

Thayer School of Engineering founded and runs the event, which has inspired thousands of students over the past 11 years while drawing recruiters from some of the top automotive manufacturers in the country.

Like Formula SAE®, students compete in aspects of design, acceleration, handling, and endurance of their vehicle and abide by a list of rules that minimize risk while preserving the students’ freedom to innovate. Formula Hybrid teams, however, are faced with the additional challenge of optimizing both energy efficiency and sustainability of materials used in their cars providing students with a uniquely challenging experiential learning opportunity.

Welcome to Formula Hybrid 2016!

The 2016 Formula Hybrid competition is underway at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Louden, NH! This year, 28 teams hailing from colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, India, and Turkey are registered for competition.

To help more teams run their cars in on-track events like Endurance, Autocross, and Acceleration, Formula Hybrid added an additional day of electrical tech inspection, and also pre-event electrical review three weeks before the competition’s start. The pre-event electrical reviews were conducted on site, at the competing team’s home institution by IEEE volunteers.

The additional day of electrical tech inspection was Sunday, May 1 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Today the Formula Hybrid teams, volunteers, and sponsors are stationed New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s two main garages focusing on electrical and technical inspections, and hiding from the steady rain. Luckily, the forecast for the remainder of the week looks more promising!

2013 Formula Hybrid: Final Wrap Up

Each year, Dartmouth’s Formula Hybrid Competition offers “an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience innovating across electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering disciplines.” This year was no exception.

“I think it’s the fastest and the funnest laboratory that engineering students could have at their disposal,” said Jerry Gappens, General Manager of the New Hampshire Motor Speedway where the competition is held each year in early May.

“I’ve never been to a NASCAR track,” said Dartmouth Formula Racing team captain Darren Reis ’13, “and so the size and the scale and being on the infield is pretty special.”

Final results in the hybrid category are:

  2. Lawrence Technological University
  3. McMaster University

…and for electric only:

  1. Dartmouth
  2. University of Vermont
  3. University of Massachusetts-Lowell

But in terms of educational value, everyone’s a winner.
